About Dog Crate Size Calculator
Crate training is an essential part of raising a well-behaved dog. It provides a safe "den" for the animal and aids in housebreaking. However, choosing the wrong size crate can ruin the experience.
The Goldilocks Rule
A crate must be:
1. Large enough for the dog to stand up without ducking, turn around comfortably, and lie down flat on their side.
2. Small enough that they cannot use one corner as a bathroom and the other corner to sleep.
Measuring Your Dog
- Length (L): Tip of nose to base of tail (add 2-4 inches for the crate).
- Height (H): Floor to top of head or ears (whichever is taller). Add 2 inches.
Puppy Tip
If buying a crate for a puppy, buy the size they will need as an Adult, but use a "Divider Panel" to shrink the space initially. Move the divider back as they grow.
