About Horse Weight Estimator
Knowing a horse's weight is vital for feeding, deworming, and administering medication. But unlike a dog, you cannot pick up a horse and step on a bathroom scale. Livestock scales are expensive and rare. The Weight Tape Method is the standard field solution used by owners and vets.
The Formula
This tool uses the standard formula:
Weight (lbs) = (Heart Girth² * Body Length) / 330
How to Measure
- Heart Girth: Measure the circumference of the chest, placing the tape just behind the elbows and over the highest part of the withers. (The "Girth" area).
- Body Length: Measure from the point of the shoulder (front) to the point of the buttock (back), in a straight line.
Accuracy
This calculation is typically accurate within +/- 5%. It is perfect for tracking weight trends (gain/loss) even if the absolute number is slightly off.
